Rainy Days Do Not Have to Limit Your Fun Indoors

Rainy days can ruin your time outside, like enjoying the park but it doesn't have to ruin your fun indoors.

Keep Boredom Away on Rainy Days

It's raining, it's pouring but it doesn't have to be boring! I live in the Sunshine State, Florida but it doesn't always live up to its name. We still have our fair share of showers and this week we received our share. While I was staying dry inside, I was inspired to come up with activities to do indoors with my kids, my husband or on my own. Try out these activities the next time it's pouring outside.

Arts, Crafts, Pictures and Videos with Kids for a Rainy Day

  • Paint, do arts, crafts together, get creative; make a picture story book using materials around the house or let the kids draw or paint the pictures for the book. Create a story together, play hide and seek or board games.
  • Ask the kids to write a short story or a poem about the rain.
  • If the kids are old enough, suggest they write a play and then dress up in costumes to act it out.
  • Have a puppet show with the kids using their dolls, toys, stuffed animals or make your own puppets using socks, old clothes, buttons and whatever else you can find.
  • Have a fashion show. Let the kids put the outfits together for everyone and walk down a pretend runway. Turn on some upbeat music. Use a hairbrush or wand as a makeshift microphone and let the kids describe what each person's wearing.
  • Have a photo shoot. Use bed sheets to pin up on a wall and take pictures or clear an area on the floor and put down blankets and sheets so the kids can pose on the floor. Take pictures from above by standing on a chair or stool.
  • Make a collage with the photos and let the kids help or make a slide show on your computer. The kids will enjoy watching it.
  • Use this time to take out the video recorder and have a fun interview with the kids. Ask them to do a weather report on the rain outside. Take turns and let them ask you questions, too. You can watch the video on another rainy day.

Play Dress Up, Have a Fashion Show and Photo Shoot

Have fun, be creative on rainy days: Dress up, have a fashion show, snap some photos, add it to your photo album, collage or slide show.

Movies and Popcorn for a Rainy Day Activity

  • Watch movies, specifically horror/suspense/thriller movies (if the kids aren't around). The storm, heavy rain and thunder sets the perfect mood to watch a good hair-raising show. Cuddle up together or bundle up under a cozy blanket if you're alone.
  • Make some chocolate-covered popcorn, something fun to do with the kids. I like to use Wilton Melts (available at craft stores like Michael's and Joann's or stores like Wal-Mart); you can pour it out into a bowl, microwave it and drizzle it onto popcorn and let it get cold in the fridge. It tastes great!

Come Up With New Recipes On Rainy Days

This is one of my creations I made with my little girl one day when we were stuck indoors. Mini rainbow cakes - while we waited for the real rainbow to show up outside!

Rainy Days Are Great for Cooking and Baking

  • Cook and bake together especially if you and your significant other don't normally do so, it can be an interesting experience. Make up new recipes.
  • Make Cloud Dough (a recipe for dough my son made at his preschool) - Instructions can be found below. Not really for eating but the kids will love playing with the dough. Use cookie cutters to cut out fun shapes.

Instructions for Cloud Dough

  1. 1 cup oil 1 cup water 6 cups flour
  2. Mix ingredients together. If you want color, add food coloring to the water before mixing.

Things to Do Alone or with Your Partner on Rainy Days

Things to do Alone
Things to do with Your Partner
Finish projects you have been putting off.
Make it an indoor date for you and your significant other: if it's not too hot, avoid using electricity, light some candles, have fondue, play board games, do a puzzle together, talk, have some wine, hot cocoa or tea. Use this time to catch up on each other
Pamper yourself: take a warm bubble bath, groom yourself, polish your nails
Pamper each other: give each other massages, foot rubs
Write in your journal or start one. Encourage the kids to start one, too. They can draw pictures instead of writing all the time and draw a picture for the cover. Put blank papers together in a three-ring binder or use a notebook.
Clean and re-organize. Turn on some music and make it fun. Get the kids involved if they're old enough to help. Make a game out of cleaning like a scavenger hunt and see who can find the most objects while sorting and organizing clutter. Clean out the closets and look through what can be donated.
Start a blog and see where it takes you.
Turn on some music and dance!
Exercise: jog in place, do lunges, walk up and down the stairs or do lunges on the stairs, do some core workout. Have kids do some fun exercises with you and maybe they will tire out and nap!

Take Advantage of Rainy Days

I like taking advantage of rainy days (when I do not have to be anywhere else) because it gives me the chance to catch up on projects, write, read or just sleep! When the kids are home, too, it is nice to take the time to spend quality time with them indoors. The same goes for when the rain traps you inside with your significant other - use the time to relax, focus on one another and maybe learn something new together!

A Rainy Day Poem

Nature's Melody

Thunder rolls through, heavy, boisterous,

Looming over, dark, dreary

Grunting, grumbling, grumpy

Lightning flashes bold, loud, shattering the sky,

Quick, striking hard.

Trees swiftly swaying to and fro,

Flowing wind, blowing, howling

It's the chorus of the winds chiming sweetly

Whispering of the storm to come.

Soaking rain pours down

In a million drizzles, cold, wet,

Plummeting forcefully to its destiny

Filling up lakes, rivers, ponds, sea,

Refreshing dry land, watering Earth's gardens.

Plenty aware, in advance,

Animals and insects scurried to hide,

To seek shelter, a day to stay in,

To remain dry and warm.

Curious eyes, wondering expressions,

Children peering out the windows,

Longing, chanting, singing,

"Rain, rain, go away..."

Eager for sun to shine and grass to dry

Plans for outdoor play, splashing in the pool

Saved for another day.

Vibrant flashes light up the sky

Exciting, frightening, roaring starts up again

Shakes, rattles, powerful,

Ryhtmic tapping on the roof, beating, pounding

Rocks some to sleep, sweeps thoughts into the land of dreams.

Soon, calm will return.

For now, listen, watch, wait, feel...

Pitter, patter, splish, splash,

Boom, boom, crash, whistle

Hear Her drum,

Her percussion

Strings are strummed,

Nature's melody...

Her concert has begun.
